On this day, Aug. 5, in 1983, folk rocker David Crosby was sentenced to eight years in prison on gun and drug charges.
In the mid-1980s, Crosby, one of the best-known musicians of the Woodstock era, was at the height of his drug addiction with a $1,000-a-day cocaine habit. He had been arrested repeatedly on drug and weapons charges, and after fleeing a drug rehabilitation clinic, he was sent to Texas State Penitentiary and served nine months.
On March 7, 2004, he was charged with possession of a gun, ammunition and an ounce of marijuana. He was fined $5,000.
Crosby has twice been inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, with the Byrds and again with Crosby Stills & Nash.
