Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., told colleagues Wednesday in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting that Congress should put aid to Japan “much higher on the radar screen” in the wake of recent disasters overseas.
“We have done some good work with our military and in other areas, but I would hope that we could get that much higher on the radar screen in terms of what our government’s ability to assist the Japanese can be,” Webb said. “People tend to think this is a rich country and therefore they can handle this, but when you have these multiple calamities, we really should be discussing that.”
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is also asking state employees to consider helping out.
In a letter to employees this week, McDonnell announced that Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC), the workplace giving campaign for state employees, has set up a special fundraising operation through the American Red Cross for those affected by the disaster.
