Two “soda bottle” bombs exploded at a Sykesville Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food restaurant, according to officials.
One bomb near the kitchen and another outside exploded at about 10 p.m. Friday, when the restaurant was closing. Customers and employees were not seriously injured.
“It?s nothing like a pipe bomb or dynamite, … but it?s still in that category,” said Jason Mowbray, deputy chief state fire marshal.
“People take certain chemicals and mix them with materials” in a closed soda bottle, causing increased pressure to build up until it explodes, he said.
The explosions required 20 firefighters and two emergency medical personnel to respond, followed by health officials, who cleaned the kitchen, where chemicals contaminated about $2,000 worth of food, which was thrown away.
