House Democrat tests positive for COVID-19, blames maskless Republicans

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman tested positive for the coronavirus and said that she believes that some of her Republican colleagues who refused to wear face coverings as lawmakers gathered in a secure room during last week’s breach of the U.S. Capitol building may be to blame.

Watson Coleman, a New Jersey Democrat who joined Congress in 2015, will turn 76 on Feb. 6.

“Following the events of Wednesday, including sheltering with several colleagues who refused to wear masks, I decided to take a Covid test. I have tested positive,” Watson Coleman wrote in a tweet on Monday.

After House lawmakers were ushered out of the House chamber when supporters of President Trump breached the Capitol last week, they were brought to an undisclosed, secure location for hours.

A video recording, first reported by Punchbowl News, later revealed that Republican lawmakers, including Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, did not wear masks for a period of time while in the room and declined to put one on when offered.

“I am home resting at this time. While I am experiencing mild, cold-like symptoms, I remain in good spirits and will continue to work on behalf of my constituents,” Watson Coleman added.

The positive test result came from a rapid antigen test, and she is awaiting the results of PCR testing, according to a statement.

Watson Colman previously received the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, which was made available to top lawmakers in December for the purpose of ensuring continuity in government.
