Mitt Romney ‘glad’ Harry Reid is retiring, wishes him ‘well’

Mitt Romney took the high road on “Fox News Sunday” when addressing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s refusal to apologize to the former GOP presidential nominee for making unsubstantiated claims about his taxes.

Specifically, Reid told CNN anchor Dana Bash last month that he harbors no regret for suggesting without evidence in 2012 that Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years.

Though Romney told Fox News host Chris Wallace that he is “disappointed” in the Nevada Democrat for his false claims, the former Republican presidential candidate nevertheless wished Reid “well” as he prepares to retire in 2016.

“He surely went over the line,” Romney explained. “[I’m] disappointed in Harry Reid. That’s really not appropriate for someone in his position to make unsubstantiated claims.”

“I think he was effective in his party but terribly ineffective in pursuing an agenda that’s right for America, and I’m glad he’s retiring,” Romney later added of Reid. “I wish him well in his retirement, but I’m glad he’s out of the Senate soon.”

The 2012 GOP presidential nominee insisted that Reid’s former claims were “entirely wrong.”

“I wish we could somehow go back and pay no taxes, but the truth is I paid a lot of taxes, released tax returns so people could see that,” Romney quipped. “Harry, I guess, just isn’t big enough to admit it.”

Of course, Reid demonstrated his bizarre (and contradictory) defense of his comments about Romney’s taxes during a recent interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos. Reid suggested that the “issue” surrounding Romney’s taxes still exists yet separately insisted that “of course” Romney paid his taxes.
