Woman killed in head-on collision
A 37-year-old D.C. woman died and four young children were critically injured in a head-on collision in Southeast Washington.
Police said a Dodge van was traveling on the 3600 block of Alabama Avenue around 7 p.m. Monday when it crossed into traffic and struck a Toyota Camry. A 2-year-old was ejected from the Toyota. Three other children were pulled out by a passer-by. Rescue crews had to extricate Toyota driver Mary Elizabeth Wimbush from under the vehicle. She died an hour later.
The children were expected to live.
Police charged the van driver, Ajene Jones, of no fixed address, with involuntary manslaughter.
Motorcyclist walks away
from crash, soon dies
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office says a St. Leonard motorcyclist walked away from a crash with no apparent serious injury but died hours later.
Authorities say Gerry Hance, 53, lost control of his Harley-Davidson and hit a tree Saturday afternoon. Hance appeared to be uninjured, and friends took him home.
But early Sunday, police say a family member found Hance unresponsive. He was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital and died.
Police say doctors think Hance suffered internal injuries. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
U.Md. asks for review of missing
footage of civil disobedience
University of Maryland officials have asked state police to review how three minutes of video was missing from 60 hours of footage taken from various angles and cameras during clashes between police and students during the ruckus celebration of the men’s basketball victory over Duke in March.
The footage was subpoenaed by defense attorneys representing a student who was allegedly beaten by police. The gap was on a 90-minute disc of surveillance video from one camera, university spokesman Millree Williams said. The footage on the disc includes the time frame of the alleged beating.
School officials are asking the state police to review the matter to see whether there are any problems with their system.
