The Giants know how to plan » The Redskins do not, or at least did not in the past. But the play of both team’s offensive lines was telling. When Washington had injuries to its line, the Redskins were forced to use backups who might not make another team’s roster. The Giants lost their starting right tackle but replaced him with a second-round pick, Will Beatty, who acquainted himself well. The Giants’ line showed no dropoff even when they lost longtime starting left guard Rich Seubert, replacing him with Kevin Boothe, who had been on their roster since 2007. There has been a philosophical divide that must be closed. The Redskins do not have one lineman who can be considered a cornerstone for the future. Not one. It’s not even worth pointing out the holes at this point.
London Fletcher’s Pro Bowl bid took a pounding Monday night » Fletcher had eight tackles, but was not impressive and several times overran the play. He did have a nice stick at the goal line. But this was his last chance to impress voters, both fans and players and, if some voters were undecided, he did not help his case. San Francisco’s Patrick Willis and Carolina’s Jon Beason both have played well of late; both are on better teams; both made the Pro Bowl last year. Add it up. Fletcher is deserving of consideration, but Monday might have made it harder for him to be more than a candidate.

The fake field goal at the end of the first half will go down as one of the worst timed calls in the Jim Zorn era » The Redskins had already burned New York earlier this season on a fake field goal. And they did it to Denver as well — after the Broncos had called time out first. But having done it twice successfully, the chances of making it work again were slim. And, it turns out, none. The Redskins wanted to hit Todd Yoder, moved to long snapper after the shift — with no one to his right, he was eligible to catch a pass. But the Giants had it covered. Some players wondered why they stuck with the play after the time out.
The effort on some plays Monday was supbar, especially in the details » For example, on one Quinton Ganther run to the right, both receivers Santana Moss and Malcolm Kelly missed their blocks. Both their men were involved in the tackle. The Giants did not miss many blocks. Get the point?
