The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah claimed Thursday that Bill Clinton came to the White House as an outsider, but the cable TV host was promptly corrected when the former president reminded him he served for several years as the governor of Arkansas.
The moment came as Clinton and Noah discussed the 2016 election and presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Noah said, “One of the biggest themes that has come up over and over again in this campaign has been: Do you want more of the same or do you want an outsider; a man who doesn’t believe in logic and ideas; someone who thinks differently.”
“Experience is touted as one of the most important things. You yourself, though, came in as somewhat of an outsider, so the question then is: What is the most important thing? Is it the experience or is it the willingness to do something?” he asked.
Clinton paused for the briefest moment, and then gently corrected his host.
“Well, first, I had an advantage. I had never been in office in Washington, and I was young,” Clinton said, “but I was the longest-serving governor in America. So I had had a lot of executive experience.”
The former president first served as governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981. He was re-elected later in 1983 and served as the governor of the Natural State until 1992.
