The name Tony Bruno is a familiar one for anyone who is a fan of sports talk radio.
He was one of the first men hired when ESPN Radio wanted to start a network. He left Bristol to go to Los Angeles to be the anchor personality when Fox Sports Radio wanted to launch a network. And he has been with Sporting News Radio and on locally in San Francisco and his native Philadelphia.

Bruno returned to national radio last year with his wildly popular “Into the Night” show now heard locally Monday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on 106.7 FM The Fan and 1370 AM Fox Sports Radio Baltimore.
He may work in Los Angeles, but his roots are in the East Coast and he is very happy to have many fans in the Washington area back listening to his show. We talked about the change from being a morning talk show host to becoming the king of night time radio and his connection to the listeners.
JW » You were a high energy morning talk show host and now you are on at night. How did you adapt so well to the change?
Bruno » I recall in the early days I would be heard locally on WTEM leading in to Tony Kornheiser’s show and we have always had a strong following in DC. As for doing mornings, you are going over what happened in sports the night before and setting things up for what’s going to happen that day. But what I have found exciting and challenging about the night show is we can keep up that same energy level because on the East Coast, games are ending and we are getting interviews. And we can also follow the games on the West Coast that are just getting underway. So it does keep things busy, but also keeps things fresh and fun.
JW » What about the future of sports talk radio?
Bruno » I think that listeners are tired of hearing hosts that just give you stats or that talk for hours about the NFL and NBA drafts like they are life and death issues. I really think people appreciate that there is more to life than sports. Yes, we are a sports show and we will bring you the best guests on radio, but we also like movies and pop culture. Some of our best shows are when “Miss Robin” (Robin Austin) will do a report like the other night when she said 1 in 5 people believe aliens from another planet live on earth among us. The phones lit up and things got crazy. You can love sports and have other interests, really it’s OK.
