Canada-born Texas senator Ted Cruz may be annoyed that Donald Trump has begun playing Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” at his rallies. But one person evidently isn’t: Mr. Springsteen himself.
In the past, Springsteen has been quick to object when conservative politicians have used his songs as their warm-up music. He loudly complained when Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, and Pat Buchanan did so. Yet even as Trump has brashly blasted “Born in the U.S.A.”, Springsteen has remained silent.
Perhaps Springsteen really likes Trump. In a way, they’re similar: Both are fabulously wealthy celebrities who have, nonetheless, managed to successfully style themselves as champions of the common men. Or possibly Bruce realizes that a significant portion of his blue-collar fan base no doubt has an affinity for Trump; why alienate them by piling on the billionaire property magnate? Or maybe he just can’t stand Ted Cruz, and is happy to see him cleverly mocked, regardless of who’s doing the mocking. Or perhaps Springsteen, unlike other rock stars, has decided to no longer be petty.
