If FedEx can track the packages it delivers, the government should be able to trace immigrants, said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Saturday.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Laconia, N.H., the Republican presidential candidate said, “At any moment, FedEx can tell you where that package is. … Yet we let people come to this country with visas, and the minute they come in — we lose track of them.”
“As president, I’m going to ask Fred Smith, the founder of FedEx — come work for the government for three months,” he quipped. “Just come for three months to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and show these people, ‘cuz guess what, of the 11 million people who are here illegally, 40 percent didn’t come in over the Southern border. Forty percent of them came in legally with a visa, and overstayed their visa.”
“We need to have a system that tracks you from the moment you come in,” continued the governor. “And then when your time is up … then we go get you, and tap you on the shoulder and say ‘excuse me, thanks for coming, time to go.'”
Christie also took some time to criticize former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on her reluctance to answer questions from the press.
“Here’s a woman who won’t answer questions,” Christie said. “She’s running for president of the United States. You think you’d see her in a room like this? Taking any question that comes up? No chance.”
Christie, a former U.S. attorney, told the audience: “I will guarantee you when I’m the Republican nominee for president and I’m on that stage next September, she’s never been cross examined by a prosecutor like me before and I’m going to ask her some question. Like first, Mrs. Clinton, why were you doing every bit of business as secretary of state on the private email server that you were keeping in the basement of your house?”
Christie himself has been under fire the past couple days, following a WNYC story that reported the New Jersey governor sent government emails from his own private Yahoo account.
