President Trump is addressing the Venezuelan community from Miami’s Florida International University while away from the White House during Presidents Day weekend.
Trump is expected to reaffirm support for interim president Juan Guaido and to condemn Venezuelan military officials for blocking U.S. aid to the country and supporting dictator Nicolas Maduro’s violent attempts to retain power. The White House warns that the administration is aware of where Venezuelan officials have money stashed away internationally.
Trump’s message will include the hope that the world will soon see the first fully democratic hemisphere in history, arguing that a triumph for democracy in Venezuela would encourage Nicaragua and Cuba to adopt democracy as well.
The White House indicated Trump will also warn against the “dangers of socialism” in his address.
Trump has been at his golf resort in West Palm Beach, Fla., during the holiday weekend after signing legislation to prevent a second government shutdown and declaring a national emergency to appropriate funding for a reinforced wall on the southern border of the United States.
