Dianne Feinstein after YouTube shooting: US a ‘nation awash in guns’

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., called the U.S. a “nation awash in guns” as she urged for “meaningful” changes to prevent gun violence, following the shooting Tuesday at YouTube’s headquarters in San Bruno.

“Only in America is a shooter unleashing gunfire in an office building a common occurrence,” Feinstein said in a statement. “Only in America are people evacuating the scene of a shooting with their hands on their heads a familiar sight.

“We simply must take meaningful steps to stop these shootings and stem the tide of gun violence in our communities,” she added. “We are a nation awash in guns. While we have just four percent of the world’s population, we have 42 percent of the world’s guns. Something must be done.”

Feinstein has been an advocate for stricter gun control regulations and introduced a measure last year that would outlaw the sale of certain semi-automatic weapons. She also has supported adjusting federal regulations so that individuals must be 21, not 18, to purchase a semi-automatic weapons.

According to San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini, at least three people were injured in the Tuesday attack at YouTube headquarters, and one more, a female shooting suspect, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
