Linda Sarsour uses Hurricane Harvey to fundraise for pro-Democrat PAC

Controversial progressive activist and Women’s March co-founder Linda Sarsour found herself in some hot water on Twitter after posting a link to a political action committee to fundraise for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Sarsour, who in July advocated for waging “jihad” against President Donald Trump and his administration, chastised Trump on Twitter for saying he pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Friday night for the ratings. She wrote, “What a disgrace. So morally bankrupt and ridiculous.”

Less than two hours later that night, Sarsour tweeted a link to raise money for the “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.”

The link Sarsour posted directs users to a fundraising page for the Texas Organizing Project Education Fund, which is a left-leaning political action committee that only donates to Democratic candidates or against Republicans.

The fundraising page gives potential donators the option to give anywhere from $20 to $10,000 to an amount you specify. The top of the page reads, “Your donation is vital to ensuring that we have the resources we need to organize and fight for Texans devastated by Hurricane Harvey!”

It continues:

“Rebuilding in areas impacted by Harvey will be most challenging for marginalized communities. Nearly a quarter of Houstonians live in poverty, approximately 550,000 people, and there are about 575,000 immigrants in the Houston metro area. We will work to ensure that Harvey’s most vulnerable victims have access to critical services from first response and basic needs to healthcare, housing and transportation.

“Together we will organize and advocate for our devastated communities, shining a spotlight on inequalities that emerge in the restoration of lives, livelihoods, and homes, amplifying the needs of hard-hit communities, and providing legal assistance for residents wrongfully denied government support.”

Outside of the above description, it’s unclear how TOP is helping victims of Hurricane Harvey. Apart from tweeting out that link, Sarsour also advocated for donating specifically to communities of color and other charities/fundraisers that aren’t the Red Cross due to the percentage of money donated that actually goes to the victims. The top entry on the anti-Red Cross site is the Texas Organizing Project.

TOP’s mission “promotes social and economic equality for low to moderate income Texans through community and electoral organizing.” It also “provides hard working Texans the opportunity to implement real change by organizing their own neighborhoods, investing their time and energy in causes relevant to their respective communities, and collectively taking ownership over TOP’s agenda, strategy and direction.”

Sarsour has yet to respond to a request for comment to this story. However, she did take to Twitter to post her reaction to the flood of questions she’s been receiving regarding her tweet.
