Peavey blames bad business climate for layoffs

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) — Hartley Peavey says the company he founded had to lay off 99 people to survive foreign competition.

He tells The Meridian Star (http://bit.ly/1t0dgWB) that Peavey Electronics, which makes amplifiers and other musical equipment, struggles against an increasingly unfriendly business environment in the United States and Mississippi, while competitors make components abroad.

The founder says his company struggles against government intrusion, rising health insurance costs and a lack of trained workers.

Peavey Electronics will still employ at least 270 people in Meridian once it closes its A Street plant.

Peavey’s remarks came Friday, the same day Gov. Phil Bryant was in Meridian touting his Mississippi Works economic development agenda. Bryant calls Peavey’s remarks “remarkable” considering his success in Mississippi, saying he hopes the state’s business leaders “would be somewhat positive.”
