Young Hokies grow up

If any coach has a younger roster in the Atlantic Coast Conference than Maryland?s Gary Williams, it?s Virginia Tech?s Seth Greenberg.

But Greenberg?s young team certainly played beyond its years in a 67-66 win over Maryland on Saturday.

“Its fun and frustrating in the same,” Greenberg said. “I?d rather coach a young talented group than not, and I really think this group is talented. The little bit of success they had this weekend will make them a little more attentive this week.”

Led by center Jeff Allen and Examiner Player of the Year and former Towson Catholic guard Malcolm Delaney, the Virginia Tech (10-6 overall, 1-1 ACC) freshman class is likely too naive to comprehend tonight?s game against Virginia (10-4, 0-1).

“The best thing about this group of guys ? I don?t think they have a clue,” Greenberg said. “They?re just going to go out and play. That?s the best thing about having six freshmen.”

MCCLINTON?S POINT IS CLEAR: Former Calvert Hall standout Jack McClinton has taken over at point guard for Miami to complement shooting guard James Drews.

McClinton, who leads the Hurricanes (14-1 overall, 1-0 ACC) in scoring (15.4 points per game) and three-point shooting (33-of-69, .478), has seen a decline in scoring the past two weeks after making a concerted effort to incorporate his teammates into the offense. No. 21 Miami visits Boston College (11-4, 2-0) tonight at 9.

“We got some production out of some other guys,” Miami coach Frank Haith said. “Jack did struggle, but I think there are some nights where Jack will score, too.”

PERFECTION FOR UNC?: After a 93-62 victory over N.C. State, North Carolina coach Roy Williams was asked if his top-ranked Tar Heels (17-0, 2-0) could go undefeated in league play.

Williams said it?s too early for his team, which is one of three Division I teams that has yet to lose, to answer the question. Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt, whose Yellow Jackets (7-8, 0-2) host the Tar Heels on Wednesday night at 9 in Atlanta, agrees.

“Its very early,” Hewitt said. “You don?t know what kind of injuries could happen. To even entertain talk of an undefeated season is a bit premature.”
