The “Miracle on Ice” is more than just a part of American history, it’s part of the fabric of what it means to be from Minnesota.
Here’s what Wizards head coach Flip Saunders had to say about it today, the 30th anniversary of the famous hockey upset:
“I was home watching it, but [then U.S. head coach] Herb Brooks was a very close friend of mine, and a lot of those guys on that team were Minnesota guys, a lot of University of Minnesota players, and so I knew a lot of those guys. I was very close to that whole situation. I had talked to Herby, of course, prior to, and I just knew a lot of his techniques of motivation so I was very clsoe to that whole situation. Like everybody else, I was very emotional. In fact, last night, durign the olympic broadcast, they showed a synopsis of the whole situation with some of those guys there. It was pretty emotional, and to know that Herby left us about seven years ago from an unfortunate auto accident was even more shocking to the people that were close to him.”
Brooks was killed in a one car auto accident in August 2003, in which it is believed he fell asleep at the wheel.
