Minutes after a 47-year-old Chicago Uber driver dropped off his passenger this weekend, he found himself defending those around him from a would-be mass shooter. Thanks to his concealed carry license, the driver incapacitated the attacker and left only the gunman injured, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The attack took place in Logan Square just before midnight, as several people were walking in front of the Uber vehicle. When the 22-year-old gunman, Everardo Custodio, started shooting, the driver took out his concealed handgun and fired six shots at Custodio, leaving him injured in his legs and lower back, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. No one else was injured.
The police showed up to the scene only after the driver had already disabled Custodio.
Custodio has since been charged with aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
The driver “was acting in self-defense and in the defense of others,” Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn told CBS.
Free idea for Uber: offer gun-toting drivers as a premium safety service.
