Gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg, who once glorified guns in his money-making hits, is calling on some 51 million Americans with 401k retirement investments to divest from stocks in weapons companies.
Stepping up his assault on guns, Dogg on Monday joined with other celebrities in the #ImUnloading campaign to hit “the gun industry where it matters most: their wallet.”
His new PSA follows the anti-gun song he cut in 2013.
“I’m unloading for my loved ones that I’ve lost,” Dogg said. “I’m going all in for gun free investing.”
The video from Campaign to Unload and States United to Prevent Gun Violence is the second installment of support for Unload Your 401k, the groups said in a release.
“There is a straight line from gun industry investment, to gun industry profits, to funding of the NRA. Half the value of these companies comes from mutual funds and most of the ‘investors’ in these funds have no idea they are inadvertently part of the problem. Now they can be part of the solution,” said Jennifer Fiore, executive director of Campaign to Unload.
“Greedy gun corporations are benefitting from the pain in our community,” said League Of Young Voters’ Executive Director Rob Biko Baker. “It’s important that we vote with our money.”
Fans of Dogg might recall his run-ins with police over guns and some of his past lyrics:
Bang Out
Bang out, til the sun comes up
The wheels fall off in the parking lot
Cause I bang out, keep my glock in hand
While you posted up, chillin’ wit cha mans
Bang out, won’t catch me sleepin
While you in the club, rollin’ out the keys
Cause I bang out, shots go off quick
Catch yo’ a– buck naked while you wit ya b—-
Cause I bang out
Downtown Assassins
So we plan a plot with an Uzi and 10 shot
Buck em till they all drop, circle round the block
Let em have it as soon as they come out
Unload on their ass, commence to takin them out!
