Green, Hagans, Torain, Williams ink contracts
The Redskins continued to seek depth for their defensive line — nose tackle in particular — and also signed a player drafted by Mike Shanahan in Denver.
Washington signed defensive tackle Howard Green, who played for Jim Haslett in New Orleans. The 6-foot-2, 320-pound Green would provide insurance at nose tackle, something the Redskins need.
Green played in 12 games for the New York Jets this past season. He started 12 games for New Orleans under Haslett in 2004, but he was later cut. He’s also played with Houston — which drafted him in the sixth round in 2002 — Seattle, Minnesota and Baltimore.
Washington also signed receivers Marques Hagans and Roydell Williams, both of whom were cut by the Redskins last summer.
The Redskins signed running back Ryan Torain, a fifth-round pick in 2008 by Denver. But he was cut last summer. Torain played in two games for the Broncos that season, rushing 15 times for 69 yards. But injuries have plagued him from college to the NFL. He missed seven games with an elbow injury as a rookie, and then was sidelined for the last seven games because of a torn ACL in his left knee. In the offseason, it was discovered that he tore the PCL in his left knee.
He was released last summer with an injury settlement. Shanahan liked him enough in Denver to keep him on the roster despite knowing he would miss substantial time with the elbow injury.
