Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., announced Wednesday she is starting a new oversight effort to keep tabs on anything Education Secretary Betsy DeVos does.
Warren says the watchdog tool will seek truth for the public and student borrowers, saying she will inform voters as “things develop so we can all stay vigilant.”
Warren said in a video released Wednesday that she wants to challenge the DeVos and the Department of Education to make sure they put “students, not private student loan companies, first.”
“With the educational and financial futures of millions of people hanging in the balance, here’s a place to start scrutinizing Secretary DeVos,” Warren wrote published in an op-ed for CNN on Wednesday.
Warren said that Congress’ decision during the Obama administration to give the federal student loan portfolio fully to the Department of Education was a “brave move that required standing up to some very powerful banks”
The Massachusetts Democrat wrote that the Education Department has now forgotten the intention behind this decision and appears to be working towards the financial benefit of everyone except the student borrowers.
Warren publicly spoke out against Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary during the February vote to confirm her.
