When Mitt Romney’s spokesman Kevin Madden gave a birthday shout-out to Rudy Giuliani’s spokeswoman Maria Comella last week in one of his e-mail blasts to reporters, he referred to Comella as “Rudy campaign spokesmodel Maria Comella.”

This got a few Washingtonians wondering: Wait, where have I heard this before?

The “spokesmodel” line was made popular around Capitol Hill by Ron Bonjean, chief of staff at the Senate Republican Conference (who’s leaving the Hill soon to pursue opportunities in the private sector) and Madden was perfectly willing to concede that, well, flattery is the highest form of imitation.
“Every witty line I’ve ever uttered on-the-record is most likely derived from something I’ve heard Ron Bonjean get a round of applause for saying,” Madden told Yeas & Nays. And Bonjean was perfectly happy to have his signature phrase duplicated.
“As a big fan of Kevin Madden and Maria Comella, I believe that spokesmodels should be allowed to celebrate their birthdays ‘spokesmodel style,’ ” Bonjean told us.
