Another participant, Lindsey Adelman, runs a New York studio that produces hand-blown glass lighting and art. The RISD alum said she remembers being inspired by the professional designers she met as a student. She said she hopes to pass along some of that passion to the next generation of artists and designers.

“A lot of people see my work when it’s published in a magazine and everything is styled just right, but I want to give an inside peek into the messy process behind that,” she said. “You have to take a leap of faith, and have a vision for how things will look in the end. I want to encourage originality, because I want to see more of that in the world.”

Allan Tear will be both speaking and talent scouting at Mindshare. Tear is the co-founder and managing partner of Betaspring, a Providence-based startup incubator. He called RISD an “incredible creative cauldron” for Rhode Island and said entrepreneurs often face the same challenges — refining ideas, raising capital, launching a startup — whether they work in industrial design, computers or the life sciences.

“The great thing about entrepreneurial gatherings is that they’re not so much about imparting wisdom as sharing experiences,” he said.

John Maeda, president of the Providence-based art and design school, said the gathering is intended help students network with professionals in their field and show art and design are relevant to a variety of industries. He calls the intersection of art, design and innovation “artrepreneurship.”
