Poll: Americans are more worried about their own government than ISIS or unemployment

Things Americans are less worried about than their malfunctioning government: terrorism, foreign policy, poverty, and unemployment.

That’s according to the latest Gallup survey, which found that in February, as in the last four months, Americans named “the government” as the number one problem facing the country. 2014 marked the first year government had ever topped this list, since Gallup first began taking the survey.

18 percent of Americans cited “dissatisfaction with the government” as the most important U.S. problem. The economy came in second place with 11 percent. That’s down from 16 percent last month, when the economy was just one point behind the government:

Only 6 percent are most concerned about terrorism, and ever fewer—4 percent—named ISIS in particular as the greatest problem.

Unemployment, immigration, and healthcare took third through fifth place on the list, while issues like national security and race relations are at the bottom of the most-mentioned topics.

Overall, 31 percent said they were happy with the direction of the country. This is not the lowest it’s ever been, but it’s also not quite a ringing endorsement.
