Kansas fails to override veto of Medicaid expansion

Medicaid will not be expanded in Kansas after the state legislature failed to override Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto of a bill to expand the health insurance program for the poor.

The Kansas House voted 81-44 to override the veto, just three votes short of the threshold needed to succeed.

Brownback vetoed the bill due to his opposition to Obamacare. He also said the Medicaid expansion lacks work requirements and would mean that more federal funding would go toward Planned Parenthood, which he opposes.

If the expansion had succeeded, it would have extended health insurance to about 150,000 people, according to the Associated Press.

Another 18 states have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Some states are taking another look at expanding Medicaid after Congress’ failure last month to repeal and replace Obamacare.
