A woman apparently crossing a street in a crosswalk was struck by a Metrobus in Southeast D.C. Thursday morning, just days after Metro started a new safety pilot to prevent that very thing.

Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening and she was being treated at a local hospital, Metro officials said.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. outside the Anacostia Metro station as a W4 bus was leaving the bus bay and turning onto Howard Road, said Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato. The bus hit the woman in a crosswalk, according to Metro’s initial reports, and she fell to the ground.

The driver has been placed on paid administrative leave and will be tested for drugs and alcohol, as is standard after any crash.

UPDATED: Asato said the bus was not equipped with new warning devices announced last week as part of a pilot program that warns pedestrians when buses make turns.
