As students of Fairfax County slurp lemonade and sleep ’til noon, change is afoot at the school system’s Falls Church headquarters.
Congratulations to Jane Strauss and Ilryoung Moon, the newly elected chairwoman and vice chairman of the school board.
Strauss, who represents the Dranesville District, served on the school board from 1991 to 1993, then 1996 to the present. She was also elected chairwoman in 2001 for a one-year term.
Strauss has classroom experience as a former elementary and preschool teacher, and was also president of the county’s PTA, as well as the PTA at Franklin Sherman Elementary.
Her master’s in teaching is from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, while her bachelor’s comes locally from George Washington University.
Also elected by his peers on the board, Moon has served the school board from 1995 to 1999, and 2004 to the present. He was chairman in 2006 and the vice-chairman in 2005.
During the 9-to-5, he’s a partner with law firm Moon, Park, and Associates, and has served on several city commissions, from planning to urban policy. He went to Harvard undergrad and earned his law degree at William and Mary.
