A former elected D.C. official was sentenced to 30 days in jail for spending $28,000 in city money on his own personal expenses.
William Shelton, 42, the former Advisory Neighborhood Commission chairman for a ward in Northeast Washington, will also have to spend 150 days in home confinement following his jail stay, prosecutors in D.C. said.

“William Shelton is a serial embezzler,” said Ronald Machen Jr., U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. “Other public officials who are thinking of exploiting their positions of trust should take a hard look at Mr. Shelton’s conviction and sentence.”
Between August 2010 and March 2011, Shelton used an ANC debit card to make 120 withdrawals of about 28,000 for himself. He has promised to pay back the money.
