A congressional candidate for Hawaii endorsed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has lost his bid to become a member of the U.S. Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez, who also describes herself as a “democratic socialist,” visited Oahu, Hawaii, on Thursday to voice her support for Kaniela Ing ahead of his Democratic primary election contest on Saturday to represent the left-leaning state’s 1st Congressional District.
Ing, 29, had only secured 6 percent of the vote with 99 percent of precincts reporting as of Sunday morning, compared to opponent former Rep. Ed Case who earned 40 percent of the vote in the six-way race.
Ocasio-Cortez’s star power is being questioned after candidates she has endorsed experience mixed success in their respective contests.
Ocasio-Cortez publicly backed Ing shortly after she defeated 10-term congressman Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., in their primary in June to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District.
America: Please send @KanielaIng to Congress with me!
He is incredibly inspiring – another working class American who knocked on 15,000 doors to win his state assembly seat.
Now he’s running for Congress. Imagine what we could accomplish if we both went in together. ??? https://t.co/WSOrvl4to1

Ing faced heightened scrutiny following the state commission imposing a $15,000 fine on him for a range of campaign finance violations, according to CNN.
