Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville predicted the party would not have a national convention to formally choose its presidential nominee.
The Democratic National Committee has already postponed this summer’s convention by one month amid the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday, Biden, the presumptive nominee, urged the party to start preparing for a possible virtual convention if the pandemic is not under control by August.
“We’re going to have to do a convention, may have to do a virtual convention. I know, I think we should be thinking about that right now. The idea of holding the convention is going to be necessary. But we may not be able to put 10, 20, 30,000 people in one place. And that’s very possible,” Biden said on ABC’s This Week on Sunday.
“The Democrats have already picked their nominee … Joe Biden,” Carville told radio show host John Catsimatidis the same morning. “There’s not going to be a convention of any kind.”
Biden’s opponent Bernie Sanders has not yet dropped out of the race, and the former vice president said he recently spoke with the Vermont senator to inform him that he was moving ahead in the process to select a running mate.
Carville said there’s a rare chance Biden will not be the nominee.
“A lot’s going to have to happen to him if he’s going to lose,” he said. “If he just stands there and does nothing, he’s going to win.”
