Senate Democrats became of the butt of the joke Tuesday after they attempted to use the new season of “Stranger Things” to criticize Republicans’ highly anticipated plan for overhauling the tax code.
“Tomorrow, the GOP is expected to finally unveil #TrumpTax plan, but w/ planned middle class tax hikes, we’re sure it’s in the upside down,” the Senate Democrats’ Twitter account said.
Included in the tweet was a meme that drew inspiration from the logo for Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” The show’s second season was released Oct. 27.
The tweet from the Senate Democrats account quickly caused a stir on social media, with many users taking to Twitter to mock the meme.
Some users crafted their own graphics using the “Stranger Things” logo to poke fun at Senate Democrats’ image.
“Lamer Things,” said one.

Others, meanwhile, suggested the Democrats’ tweet was a failed attempt to connect politics with pop culture.

Senate Democrats ultimately conceded the meme wasn’t exactly a hit, but continued to denounce the GOP’s upcoming tax reform bill.
“Alright, this meme is pretty bad. Is it worse than tax hikes for the middle class that pay for tax giveaways for the 1%? No chance,” Senate Democrats said in a follow-up tweet.
