VA secretary’s heated exchange with a Republican congressman: ‘What have you done?’

Things escalated pretty quickly in this congressional hearing, featuring Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) and Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald.

Coffman was questioning McDonald on his management of the scandal-ridden agency, hitting him for “glossing over the extraordinary problems confronted by your department.”

“I gotta tell you, I think the public relations are great today but there’s no substance,” Coffman said.

McDonald lashed back, snapping, “I’m offended by your comment. Actually, I’ve been here six months. You’ve been here longer than I have. If there’s a problem in Denver, I think you own it more than I do.”

“Maybe if you want I’ll give you my cellphone tonight and you can answer some of the calls and see if I’m making a difference for veterans and see what they say,” he continued.

“I’ve run a large company, sir,” McDonald challenged Coffman. “What have you done?”

Concerned Veterans for America later called on McDonald to apologize to Coffman, an Iraq War veteran.

And the spat didn’t end there—Coffman has since unleashed a tirade against McDonald on his Facebook page:

Let me start by telling you something I haven’t done. I have never run a federal agency that tolerates corruption the way the VA has. I’ve never built a hospital that’s years behind schedule and hundreds of millions over budget. And I’ve never been a shill for inept bureaucrats who allowed American heroes to die on a medical waiting list while waiting for medical service. This is the most arrogant administration in our lifetime. Most would apologize for a scandal committed against our military service men and women. This administration is seemingly incapable of feeling shame.
