Shots fired at San Francisco cops

Two San Francisco Bay-area police officers were shot at by a man early Thursday morning, authorities said.

The officers, who returned fire at their attacker, were unharmed in the incident, and a suspect was in custody by early afternoon.

The shooting occurred at 3 a.m. near Orange Memorial Park, according to local NBC News affiliate KNTV. It is not clear whether the attacker was hit by the officers. Authorities also did not specify the alleged shooter’s motivation.

The shooting comes amid rising tensions nationally after grand juries declined to indict white police officers in Missouri and New York in late 2014 for incidents that resulted in the deaths of African-American citizens — and less than a month after two New York police officers were slain in their car by a man who said his motivation was hatred of cops.

Two Los Angeles police officers were shot at earlier this week in what was initially thought to be a similar ambush attack. A subsequent investigation determined the officers were not targeted by the attackers but had instead chanced upon a gang-related shooting.
