‘Brexit’ vote tightens as Scotland shrugs

The “Leave” campaign was up, ever slightly, at the 3:24 a.m. mark, London time, in the vote count for a UK-wide referendum to either “Stay” in or “Leave” the European Union.

“Leave” led with 51.2 percent of the vote to 48.8 percent for “Remain” — 5,555,803 to 5,295,875 votes.

The “Stay” campaign had been up only minutes before and some experts are predicting that the final result will come down to turnout in the “Stay” strongholds of London and Scotland.

That could be disastrous news for those who want Britain to stay in Europe.

“Turnout in Scotland is lower than many pro-EU supporters had hoped,” reports the Wall Street Journal‘s Max Colchester. “[W]hile they have solidly backed ‘Remain’, turnout has been less impressive. Some 56% of people cast votes in Glasgow. Edinburgh has yet to report, and that is expected to post a healthy turnout. So far only two counting centers in Scotland have reported turnout above 70%.

“The result: pro-EU camp is increasingly leaning on London to save the day.”
