Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said he and Donald Trump are willing to “accept” that President Obama was born in the United States.
In an interview with an ABC affiliate on the campaign trail on Wednesday, Pence admitted that the GOP ticket recognizes Obama’s birth in the United States as legitimate.
“Donald Trump and I both accept that the president was born in the United States of America,” Pence told ABC. “Questions were raised in prior campaigns over the last four and eight years by various sources and they’ve all been answered.”
Pence’s answer differs from his previous comments about the “birther” issue, as it includes Trump in his statement of willingness to accept the president’s place of birth. Trump, who routinely questioned Obama’s birthplace before running for office, has since avoided questions about the issue. Earlier this month when asked about the birther issue, Trump said, “I don’t talk about it anymore.”
