White House officials have seen no evidence that President Trump is the target of any law enforcement or intelligence investigations, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Wednesday.
“There is no reason that we have to think that the president is the target of any investigation whatsoever,” Spicer said. “There’s no reason to believe that he is the target of any investigation. I think that’s a very important point to make.”
Minutes earlier, Spicer had said the administration wanted to “find out” whether Trump was the target of a counter-intelligence probe. Trump raised eyebrows over the weekend when he claimed in a series of sensational tweets that Barack Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower during the campaign. The president later asked Congress to investigate that claim.
“The tweet dealt with wiretaps during the thing, the other is an investigation. They are two separate issues,” Spicer said on Wednesday. “There is no reason to believe that there is any type of investigation with respect to the Department of Justice.”
Asked earlier in the briefing whether Trump is the target of an investigation, Spicer had said: “I think that’s one of the issues that we have asked the Senate and House to look into.”
Spicer dismissed allegations of the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russian officials, which have surfaced repeatedly in news reports but which have not been substantiated by investigators.
“All of the people who have been briefed on this situation have come to the same conclusion,” Spicer said. “This fake narrative gets repeated over and over again.”
