Heat imaging can show doctors abnormalities in the breast tissue that may elude traditional breast cancer exams. Digital infrared thermal imaging involves monitoring subtle changes in skin temperature through an infrared scanning device.
“The scans are correct in detecting malignant or benign growths 99 percent of the time,” said Irv Nagle, certified clinical thermographer with Your Rx for Health.
Dr. William Pawluk and Your Rx For Health will host a discussion of breast health and digital infrared thermal imaging at the Wellness Center in Owings Mills on Dec. 13. For information, call 410-356-2169.
Mammography and ultrasound pinpoint where the palpable mass is located. But these methods cannot detect inflammatory breast cancer, which causes the entire breast to become cancerous, rather than a single defined tumor.
Thermography is FDA approved, painless, uses no radiation, and has proven extremely accurate at uncovering developing disease 5 to 8 years before detection on a mammogram, Nagle said.
