Swimming shows sanity, will other sports follow?

The decision late last week by FINA, the governing body of swimming, to ban record-setting bodysuits was long overdue, proof that the intoxication of world records eventually wears off over time. Here are three no-brainers we hope will “follow suit”:

(1) The elimination of the Bowl Championship Series: After three months of extraordinarily compelling games, college football is reduced to argument for argument’s sake by mid-November. Until a playoff decides a true national champion once and for all, BCS honchos deserve every bit of ridicule they endure.

(2) An amended NCAA men’s basketball tournament play-in game: Enough with two unheralded conference champions vying for the chance to get pummeled by the No. 1 seed. Either reduce the tournament to 64 teams, or pair two at-large, major conference teams for a game that will draw ratings and impact the overall draw.

(3) Give home field advantage in the Major League Baseball playoffs to the team with the best record: The All-Star Game may matter. The reasoning still doesn’t make sense.
