A record number of travelers flew out of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in 2011, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said Wednesday.
The airport had 22.4 million commercial passengers in the calendar year, a 2.1 percent increase over the previous record set in 2010.
The airport also shipped more cargo than in 2010, with a 5.3 percent increase over 2010.
“This record year is another sign of Maryland’s strong recovery from the national economic downturn,” O’Malley said in a written statement.
The Intercounty Connector highway, which as of late 2011 now runs to Interstate 95, is expected to give a more direct route to the airport from the western parts of the Washington region.
