Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders indicated on Saturday that Republicans will face stiff opposition in trying to pass legislation on their next major effort: passing tax reform legislation.
“We now must take on a horrific Republican budget and efforts at ‘tax reform’ which means huge tax breaks to billionaires and corporations,” Sanders said in a tweet.
Sanders’ comment comes less than one day after the Republican’s Obamacare replacement plan, the American Health Care Act, was pulled from the House floor when it became all but certain it didn’t have the votes to pass.
Sanders later said Democrats “should take credit” for killing the bill. Though Sanders identifies as an independent, he caucuses with Democrats and vied for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2016 campaign.
Both President Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan said after the healthcare bill vote was scrapped that they are now looking to move on to tax reform.
New deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Keith Ellison, also signaled incoming Democratic opposition to the Republicans’ next effort.
“Don’t gloat; get ready for round 2. Organize!” he tweeted.
Editor’s note: A prior version of this article said Rep. Keith Ellison is the chairman of the DNC. He is the deputy chair. The Washington Examiner regrets the error.
