David Drucker on MSNBC: Biden should pick a bipartisan Supreme Court nominee

President Joe Biden should pick a Supreme Court nominee who would attract bipartisan support, Washington Examiner senior political correspondent David Drucker said on Tuesday.

Drucker said it would be helpful if Biden picked a candidate who could receive support from both parties given his recent struggles to gain bipartisan backing for other policies and because the selection has “become so politicized.”

“I think that it is helpful politically for the president to try and garner some bipartisan support and engage both parties and independents,” Drucker, the author of In Trump’s Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP, said on MSNBC’s Craig Melvin Reports. “Americans understand that this is, in one way, is a very political move by any president.”

Drucker predicted that the president is “likely to get a couple Republicans supporting one of his picks, depending on who it is.”

Still, the political correspondent cast doubt on Biden’s willingness to select a centrist, noting “the base of each party” focuses more on these Supreme Court nominations than they did 30 or 40 years ago.

“There’s much more scrutiny than there was decades ago,” he commented.

Ultimately, Drucker said he sees the nomination process and vote playing out similarly to the three picks under former President Donald Trump’s tenure. Three Supreme Court justices were confirmed under Trump, each along mostly partisan lines.
