CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney says he can beat Obama in a presidential debate because he’s “got some pretty good zingers” and a record of successes in private and public life.
“I think I’ve got the best ideas for our nation [and] I think I’ve got some pretty good zingers in the debates,” Romney said at a town hall meeting in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, explaining why he is best suited to challenge Obama in a debate. “I think I will be best able to post up against the president if we’re talking about the economy, in particular.”
Romney goaded about his success in the private sector and his role in organizing the 2002 Winter Olympics, saying Obama has no record of leadership to match his own.
“I have credibility and the president does not,” he said, speaking to a crowd of roughly 150 voters inside a Diamond V manufacturing plant, which produces nutritional supplements for animal feed.
“Both [my] businesses were successful, the Olympics were successful, my state was successful,” he continued. “Those experiences of leadership in addition to the capacity to debate darn well and to take it to the president on the failure of his economic policies will allow me to become the next president of the United States.”
