Man charged with arson in MoCo apartment fire

A man has been charged with arson after he confessed to setting a blaze at a Silver Spring apartment complex that injured two firefighters and displaced dozens of people, authorities said.

Abraham Ogazgi Kiflu, 24, went to a police station shortly after midnight Wednesday and asked to speak with a fire marshal, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. During the interview, he confessed to starting the blaze, which broke at the two-story apartment complex located at 2815 Terrace Drive at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire officials said Kiflu was a relative of a tenant and was living at the complex.

Two firefighters were hurt battling the three-alarm blaze. One suffered serious but not life-threatening heat-related injuries; another suffered minor orthopedic injuries, authorities said.

Officials said the fire caused more than $1 million in damage to 34 units and displaced about 100 people. No residents were injured.

Kiflu is charged with first-degree arson.
