Metro riders can expect to see more police officers and bomb-sniffing dogs on the system in the next few days, according to the transit agency, but such efforts are not connected with the recent news that the District is a target of “credible but unconfirmed threats” tied to the 9/11 anniversary.
There is “no specific or credible threat” against the Metro system, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Friday morning.
The transit agency had been stepping up efforts in advance of the anniversary that falls on Sunday, Stessel said. That includes more patrols by Metro Transit Police and other cooperating local agencies, plus measures that riders cannot see, he said.
On Friday morning, for example, transit police and local officers flooded Shady Grove at the west end of the Red Line.
Those efforts will continue for the next few days at least. And yes, random bag checks are continuing as usual, occurring “just about every day of the week” as they normally do, he said.
Stessel did say that the agency is prepared to protect the system with additional measures should the agency become a specific target.
