Gov. Chris Christie moved to allow betting on sports at casinos and racetracks in New Jersey, setting up a possible fight with professional sports leagues.
After a review of state law which found nothing barring betting on sports, the Republican governor issued an action allowing it on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
Several professional and collegiate sports leagues are expected to challenge the move in court, though it still unknown exactly when the motion will officially go into affect.
“The motion simply would clarify and formalize that authority and give clear guidance to casinos and racetracks waiting to open a sports pool in New Jersey,” the governor’s office wrote in a statement.
“Victory at last!” tweeted Democratic state Sen. Raymond Lesniak, one of the legislature’s strongest supporters of sports betting.
