Schiff: Nunes must be willing to subpoena witnesses for Russia probe

California Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, is pressuring Chairman Devin Nunes to subpoena witnesses for its investigation into possible collusion between Russia and President Trump’s campaign.

“He’s going to have to be willing to use subpoena power because there will be people we need to bring before the committee who may not be willing witnesses, and if we’re going to do this credibly — and right now we’re the only game in town, we and the Senate Intelligence Committee — we’re gonna need the power of compulsion,” Schiff told NBC “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd.

“At the end of the day, the real question where the rubber will really hit the road is, as you suggest, when we have to use compulsion to get documents that we need, to bring in witnesses. I hope the answer is going to be yes from the majority,” Schiff added.

The leading Democrat on the committee said he has not received that authority from Nunes, a fellow Californian, as of yet.

Possible witnesses could include former Trump White House national security Michael Flynn; former Trump campaign national security team adviser Carter Page; and a long-time friend to Trump, Roger Stone.

Schiff, who could be warming the skittle in anticipation for that conversation with the committee boss, said he is waiting until all of the intelligence is received before possibly subpoenaing witnesses.

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes on Sunday told Fox News that new evidence the FBI released to the committee on Friday regarding an investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia did not affect the current findings that there was none.

The California Republican said his committee’s newest concern is the possibility that certain campaign officials’ names were “unmasked” by the media.

FBI Director James Comey is scheduled to testify before Nunes’ committee on the issue Monday. He will also address the House committee’s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
