President Trump said Friday that Democrats are willing to endure a partial government shutdown that could hurt troops as they fight for a bill to create a new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
“Sadly, Democrats want to stop paying our troops and government workers in order to give a sweetheart deal, not a fair deal, for DACA. Take care of our Military, and our Country, FIRST!” Trump tweeted Friday morning.

Democrats have been pushing for a way to legislate DACA after Trump said he would rescind the unilateral Obama-era program on March 5. While they want a deal as soon as possible, it’s unlikely one can be put together in time for Jan. 19, by which Congress has to extend federal funding to avoid a partial shutdown.
Meanwhile, Republicans have been pushing for border security measures and other immigration reforms, and have said immigration issues should be considered separately from the spending bill.
