One arrested in teenage brawl
Montgomery County police arrested one person in connection with a brawl between dozens of teenagers Wednesday.
The fight began at about 1:20 p.m. on the 900 block of Gabel Street in Silver Spring. Police said they had no idea how the fight started but estimated about 50 teens had been involved. Most scattered when police arrived, though, said police spokeswoman Officer Janelle Smith.
One participant was arrested for possession of a handgun that police found nearby, Smith said.
Man arrested in wife’s stabbing death
A Prince William County man has been arrested in his wife’s stabbing death, police said.
Abdul Rahman Talib Din, 44, is charged with first-degree murder for the death of 47-year-old Joanna Bell Lowe, according to Prince William County police.
Din had initially called authorities early Tuesday morning and reported that Lowe had stabbed herself, police said. However, detectives learned the couple had been involved in a verbal altercation that became physical. Authorities said Din stabbed his wife with a knife.
Din, who is also known as Derrick Delano Wilson, is being held without bond.
Roberts: Md. police can collect DNA samples
Banned from doing so by a court ruling, Maryland police can once again collect DNA samples from perpetrators of serious crimes, the Associated Press reported.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a court order Wednesday that blocks an earlier ruling that forbade Maryland police from collecting DNA from suspects without a warrant, according to the AP, and the order will stand until at least July 25.
The case before the Supreme Court stems from a case in which Alonzo Jay King Jr. was convicted of rape after police arrested him on an assault charge in 2009. His DNA was collected and found to match DNA from a 2003 rape case. A Maryland Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in April because the DNA was not needed to convict him on the assault charge.
