Teachers’ union endorses Orange for at-large council seat

The Washington Teachers’ Union endorsed Vincent Orange for the D.C. Council at-large seat, saying they were sweet on his push for universal preschool and grades 3-8 policy when Orange was the Ward 3 councilman.

The endorsement appears at odds with incumbent Sekou Biddle getting the “Education Reformer of the Month” nod from Democrats for Education Reform just a few weeks ago.

But the union harped on Orange’s introduction of the Educational Policies for 3rd and 8th Grade Students Act of 2005, and said he played a major rule in developing McKinley Senior High School and Noyes Education Campus. (Ironically, those two schools have been making a lot a lot — of headlines lately.)

Orange’s wife, Gwen, teaches in D.C. Public Schools, the system from which Orange got his own education.

“We are confident that Vincent Orange’s commitment to public service and ability to successfully collaborate make him an excellent choice for D.C. City Councilmember At-large,” union President Nathan Saunders said. “His proven experience, integrity and accountability positively impacted our members and the community. He is an independent voice who will stand for education progress.”
