Comments on the return of Emilio

D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper:

“We never really thought it was an option for him here because of the money. When were not able to execute a trade – and we were very close – basically with our injury situation, a guy who is available. It’s not easy to pick up pieces outside of the transfer window, especially this early in the league, to make a trade, to add a player to help you in any position so it was really a no-brainer once we got past a deal that made sense for us.”

What will determine whether his option is exercised in July?

“Obviously, his performance. He and I spoke about that, where we are at that time, what the team’s particular needs will be. There’ll be a lot of factors.”

Are you concerned about his mentality given what happened in the offseason?

“He’s a professional. He’s a sharp guy. We laughed this morning over a coffee at Starbucks, and he said, ‘I feel like I’m coming home.’”

D.C. United head coach Curt Onalfo

“It’s something that’s been in the works for a while, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s another attacking player that has scored more than 40 goals in three years. I’m extremely pleased to have him on our team.”

Santino Quaranta

“We’re excited to have Luci. Even last year, people were really down for him, and he still scores ten goals for us. Right now, I think he’s going to help us. I’m sure there’s a lot of fans that are up in arms about this move. But they couldn’t come to terms on an agreement or whatever during the offseason, and Luci’s a great guy. He fits right in back here with the guys, and it’s like he never left.”

Adam Cristman

“It’s just more motivation for me to keep working harder every day, and ultimately, I have a role on the team. Whether it’s starting a game or whether it’s coming in as a reserve, that’s what I do, and it’s part of the job. I just do what I can and make it a tough decision every week for the coach not to put me on the field, and ultimately, it’s going to make team better.”
